DC TV Watch: 7 Burning Questions for 'Supergirl's' 2018 Return

During the holiday hiatus, THR breaks down all the burning questions left over from the 'Arrow-verse' midseason finales. This week's focus is on 'Supergirl.'

Welcome back to The Hollywood Reporter's weekly DC TV Watch, a rundown of all things DC Comics on TV. Every Friday, we round up the major twists, epic fights, new mysteries and anything else that goes down on The CW's Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Black Lightning and Fox's Gotham. This week, we're asking all the burning questions left over from Supergirl's midseason finale, "Reign," that need answers in anticipation of its Jan. 15, 2018 return.

Supergirl

1. Was that "Reign" cliffhanger a misdirect?

There's no question that Sam Arias (Odette Annable) has officially become Reign, the Kryptonian-created Worldkiller and Supergirl's (Melissa Benoist) most formidable enemy yet. But is it permanent? After her villainous alter ego took over Sam's body after a visit to her Fortress of Sanctuary, the all-black killing machine put her evil plan into action. First, she left her mark all over National City. Then she began killing people. Her next and final step? Bringing about the end of the world. She isn't called Worldkiller for nothing. But is Sam's consciousness still somewhere inside of Reign? It seems like the single mother is blacking out whenever Reign takes over her body, and doesn't seem to think anything is wrong. She didn't even remember her trip to the Fortress of Sanctuary. But the cliffhanger at the end of the midseason finale showed Sam, not dressed as Reign but in her normal clothes, seemingly attacking her own daughter Ruby (Emma Tremblay). Since we didn't see her face as the scene cut away quickly to credits, there's a chance this was just a redirect and Sam and Ruby are both fine. But perhaps Sam killing Ruby could be the spark that allows Reign to take over control of Sam fully, as Sam would never be able to recover from Ruby's death. Was that final scene for real, or is it just a misdirect to keep fans hooked during the long holiday break?

2. What happened to Supergirl?

If anyone had questions over how ruthless and powerful Reign would be, the midseason finale answered all of them. The Worldkiller was stronger, faster and more brutal than Kara or anyone else ever expected. By the end of their first face-to-face fight, Reign left Kara bloody, broken and unconscious, laying in the ruins of a National City plaza as Alex (Chyler Leigh) and other civilians could only look down at her body in horror. What was once impossible (making Kara bleed from the head, giving her a black eye that lasts, knocking her out physically) became a shocking reality. How long will it take for Kara to wake up? How extensive are her injuries? How will this affect the way she deals with Reign moving forward? Can she even take out Reign on her own? How will Supergirl's defeat affect the city? Will her very public defeat cause panic?

3. What will the Arrow-verse version of the Legion of Super-Heroes look like?

Although Supergirl has only just scratched the surface of Mon-El's (Chris Wood) time in the future, he did finally explain to Kara that he spent the past few months in the 31st century building the Legion of Super-Heroes, the famous superhero team-up from the comics, with his new wife Imra Ardeen (Amy Jackson) aka Saturn Girl. With the debut of classic Legion character Brainiac 5 (Jess Rath) coming in the new year and the flash of the Legion ring in the trailer for the show's 2018 return, it's clear that the series is going to dive deep into the DC Comics staple. But will The CW's onscreen version be what fans are expecting to see from the team, or will there be big changes from the source material coming?

4. What is going on with Lena Luthor and James Olsen?

So apparently Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) and James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) are a thing now. In the span of only one episode, the bickering colleagues both decided their bickering was indicative of something more and made out in CatCo. That was … fast. Will these two decide their chemistry was a one-time thing, or is this relationship actually something real? For how fast of an onset it had, it wouldn't be surprising to see it fizzle just as quickly. Fans barely had enough time to recover from the emotional whiplash of hate to hookup!

5. How long will Kara have to suffer through seeing Mon-El happily married to another woman?

First of all, subjecting Kara to having to sit through seeing Mon-El and Imra enjoy a romantic and adorable all-you-can-eat ribs meal was downright cruel. All-you-can-eat ribs was one of the happiest moments for Kara and Mon-El when they were together! And then to add insult to injury, Imra is actually the sweetest and most empathetic woman to Kara's broken heart, so Kara can't exactly hate her. She's truly stuck in the worst situation ever with no good way out. How long will she have to endure being around her ex, whom she still loves, as he moved on and got married in the future, believing he'd never see Kara again? And how long will the Legion be stuck in the present instead of returning to the future where Mon-El and Imra can be happy and not feel guilty showing off their happiness? This is just brutal for all parties involved.

6. Will Superman return?

It's been quite a long time since Kara's more famous cousin Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) took a trip to National City. In light of all of her personal struggles with losing Mon-El and turning her back on her humanity, as well as her defeat at the hands of Reign, is this what it will take to have Clark return to his cousin's side?

7. Where is Reign getting her lipstick?

That dark shade is really working for the Worldkiller. Where can one get that particular shade in real-life? Asking for a friend.

Gotham airs Thursdays on Fox. Supergirl airs Mondays, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow air Tuesdays, Arrow airs Thursdays and Black Lightning will premiere Tuesday, Jan. 16, all on The CW.
