Kevin Spacey: More allegations of sexual harassment surface

New allegations have emerged from a number of men accusing Kevin Spacey of sexual misconduct.

US filmmaker Tony Montana claims he was groped by the actor in a Los Angeles bar in 2003.

Montana says he was left with PTSD for six months after he claims Spacey "forcefully" grabbed his crotch.

It follows an allegation made by Anthony Rapp that the House of Cards actor tried to "seduce" him when he was 14 years old.

Kevin Spacey says he has no recollection of that encounter, and was "beyond horrified".

Image caption It's claimed Kevin Spacey "routinely preyed" on young male actors while he was artistic director at the Old Vic

Film director Montana told Radar Online that he was in his thirties when the incident took place at the Coronet Bar in LA.

He says he removed Spacey's hand from his crotch and walked away, but claims the actor later followed him into the men's toilets.

'Routinely preyed'

Incidents regarding Spacey are also alleged to have taken place in the UK while the two-time Oscar winner was the artistic director at the Old Vic in London between 2004 and 2015.

Mexican actor Roberto Cavazos, who acted in several plays at the theatre, claims Spacey "routinely preyed" on young male actors.

"It seems the only requirement was to be a male under the age of 30 for Mr Spacey to feel free to touch us," he wrote in a Facebook post.

He said he fended off two "unpleasant" advances from Spacey that "bordered on harassment," but that others were afraid to do so.

"There are a lot of us who have a 'Kevin Spacey story'," says Cavazos.

The Old Vic has set up a confidential complaints process for anyone connected to the 200-year-old theatre to come forward.

It said in a statement: "We aim to foster a safe and supportive environment without prejudice, harassment or bullying of any sort, at any level."

'Seedy and a bit weird'

Separately, a British man claims Kevin Spacey exposed himself to him in 2010, when he was working at a hotel in West Sussex.

Speaking to the Sun, Daniel Beal alleges the Usual Suspects star flashed his private parts, saying: "It's big, isn't it?" and tried to get the then 19-year-old to touch him.

  • Netflix suspends production of sixth series of House of Cards
  • Spacey's special Emmy award withdrawn
  • Why are people angry about Kevin Spacey coming out?

The former bartender claims Spacey also invited him up to his room, but he rejected the star's advances.

Beal says Spacey gave him his £5,000 watch later that same evening, and a few weeks later called him asking to meet up.

He told the Sun: "In hindsight, that must have been grooming. He was just like his character in House Of Cards – seedy and a bit weird."

'Either stupid or predatory'

The BBC has also uncovered allegations of sexual misconduct against Spacey by a man who claims he was harassed by the star in the mid-1980s.

The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, says he met the star at theatre school before being invited to New York by him, when he was 17 years old.

Speaking to the Victoria Derbyshire programme, the man (who they've called John), says despite sleeping on the star's sofa he woke up fully clothed with Spacey lying on him, in his underwear.

John, who still works in the entertainment industry, said Spacey again became "affectionate" the second night he was in the city.

"I burst into tears because I couldn't articulate any more what was happening to me. I was scared… To his credit, he backed off and we went to sleep."

Reflecting on his experience, John says: "It seems he was grooming me. For me, I never let on that that's what I was interested in. I never discussed it, nor did I want it.

John points out neither of them drank any alcohol that weekend.

"He was either very stupid or he was predatory – or maybe a little of both. I was uncomfortable at best, traumatised at worst, emotionally.

John says he didn't tell the authorities or his parents at the time, although he has since told friends.

The BBC has contacted representatives of Kevin Spacey for his response to these allegations.

Meanwhile, production of the sixth season of Netflix series House of Cards has been suspended following the sexual assault allegations against the actor.

The show was already due to end after this season, but production is now suspended "until further notice".

Spacey has also been dropped as the recipient of a special Emmy award he was due to receive next month.

The International TV Academy said in a statement that it was withdrawing the International Emmy Founders Award "in light of recent events".

Hamas hands PA control of Gaza border crossings

Hamas hands PA control of Gaza border crossings

The Islamist group Hamas has begun handing control of border crossings in Gaza to the Palestinian Authority (PA) as part of a reconciliation deal.

A ceremony at the Rafah crossing with Egypt saw a formal transfer from a Hamas official to his PA counterpart.

At the Erez and Kerem Shalom crossings with Israel, Hamas offices and security equipment were being dismantled.

Next month, the internationally-recognised PA is due to take full control of security in Gaza.

The reconciliation deal, brokered by Egypt last month, aims to end a decade-long split between Hamas and its secular rival, Fatah, which dominates the PA.

Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have been ruled separately since deadly clashes between Hamas and Fatah broke out in 2007.

Hamas won parliamentary elections in the occupied territories the previous year, and reinforced its power in Gaza after ousting Fatah from the enclave.

  • Palestinian factions end split on Gaza
  • Gazans hope for end to feud
  • Has Hamas changed?

In what was seen as the first key test of the reconciliation agreement, the director of the Palestinian Borders and Crossings Authority, Nazmi Muhanna, took full control of the Rafah crossing on Wednesday.

In a short speech, PA Public Works Minister Mufeed al-Hasayneh declared that "the word 'split' will not exist in the Palestinian dictionary anymore".

"There is no yellow and green. All our Palestinian people are under the Palestinian flag," he said, referring to the main colours of the Fatah and Hamas flags.

Civil Affairs Minister Hussein Sheikh said the Rafah crossing would resume full operations on 15 November, when PA border officials and members of the Presidential Guard would be in place.

Rafah has largely been closed since 2007, when Israel and Egypt tightened their blockades of Gaza in response to the Hamas takeover and in an attempt to prevent attacks by militants.

There were no ceremonies at the Erez and Kerem Shalom crossings on Wednesday. But PA officials were seen moving in as Hamas security officials packed up equipment and departed in vehicles.

All the Palestinian factions are due to meet in Cairo on 21 November to continue discussing implementation of the reconciliation deal, including the formation of a unity government that is not expected to include Hamas members.

The issue of the tens of thousands of civil servants employed by Hamas in Gaza will be resolved by February 2018, but the role of Hamas's 25,000-strong military wing was not mentioned in the agreement.

Israel and the US have expressed reservations about the reconciliation deal.

The US said any Palestinian unity government would need to recognise the State of Israel, disarm "terrorists", and commit to peaceful negotiations. If Hamas was to play any role, it added, it would have to accept those requirements.

Israel – which like the US considers Hamas a terrorist organisation and has fought three wars with militants in Gaza – said it would not deal with a Palestinian government that "relies on Hamas".

Pakistani police arrested a newly married woman on murder charges after she allegedly poisoned her husband's milk and it inadvertently killed 17 other people in a remote village, a senior police officer said Wednesday.

District police chief Sohail Habib Tajak said a judge allowed the police to question the woman, 21-year-old Aasia Bibi, for two weeks to determine whether it was the woman's decision or her boyfriend had incited her to kill her husband by poisoning.

"This incident took place last week and our officers have made progress by arresting a woman and her lover in connection with this murder case, which was complicated and challenging for us," Tajak told The Associated Press.

He said Bibi was married against her will in September in a village near the town of Ali Pur, 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Multan, a city in the eastern Punjab province.

Tajak said Bibi was not happy with her husband and wanted to return to her parents' home.

She apparently obtained a poisonous substance from her boyfriend, Shahid Lashari, last week and mixed it in milk for her husband, who refused to drink it, Tajak also said.

The woman's mother-in-law later inadvertently used the tainted milk to make a traditional yogurt-based drink and served it to 27 members of her extended family, who fell unconscious and were hospitalized.

Seventeen people died and 10 are still being treated in hospital, he said.

Bibi and Lashari appeared before a judge in the city of Muzaffargarh on Tuesday, where she told reporters that she was angered over her parents' decision to marry her to a man against her will. They did not have lawyers.

"I repeatedly asked my parents not to marry me against my will as my religion, Islam, also allows me to choose the man of my choice for marriage but my parents rejected all of my pleas and they married me to a relative," she said.

She said her love affair with her boyfriend continued after she got married.

Bibi said she had warned her parents that she was capable of going to any length to get out of the marriage, but they refused to allow her to get a divorce.

She said Lashari gave her a poisonous substance, which she used to try to kill her husband. She expressed remorse over the deaths, saying her target was only her husband.

Tajak said police were trying to trace and arrest all those who were aware of the plot. He said Lashari confessed to supplying the poisonous substance.

Faisal Chingwani, a top human rights activist in the city of Multan, said Bibi apparently committed the crime because she was mentally stressed about the forced marriage.

Many parents in Pakistan arrange marriages for their daughters against their will.

Also Wednesday, in the eastern city of Lahore, a brother shot and killed his sister who had recently wedded a man of her choice without consent from her family in the latest case of so-called honor killings.

Police officer Shaikh Hammad said Mahwish Arif, 25, was fatally shot by her younger brother Samar Ali. The brother fired three bullets as Arif came to visit her parental home, months after the marriage, in the suburban area of Satu Katla.

Hammad said Ali fled the scene after killing his sister. A police search was under way.

Nearly 1,000 Pakistani women are killed by close relatives each year in honor killings.

Explainer: What is Russia’s new VPN law all about?

Explainer: What is Russia's new VPN law all about?

Media playback is unsupported on your device
Media captionEXPLAINED: What is a VPN service?

A Russian law regulating the use of technologies enabling users to search the internet anonymously is coming into force on 1 November.

Many are worried the law will make it harder for Russians to bypass internet censorship.

Signed by President Vladimir Putin in July, the law imposes restrictions on proxy avoidance tools.

These tools include virtual private networks (VPNs) and anonymous proxy servers (anonymisers).

VPN providers will be obliged to closely cooperate with Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor and comply with its requests.

    What's a VPN?

A VPN is a private network created over a public network.

Despite popular belief, VPNs cannot make online connections completely anonymous, because some VPN providers can keep users' logs.

However, they can still increase a user's privacy and security by hiding their IP address.

In a corporate work setting, VPNs allow employees to securely access an intranet from outside the office.

Both VPNs and anonymisers allow a user to appear as if they were connecting to the internet from another location.

    What exactly is banned?

    Image copyright Getty Images
Image caption Under the new law, VPNs can be used only to access websites not banned by Russia

Despite widespread speculation, the law does not directly ban the operation of VPNs and anonymisers. However, it does restrict access to banned websites with the help of these tools.

VPN providers will get access to Roskomnadzor's blacklist of banned websites and will be entitled to provide the use of their servers "within the legal framework", the banki.ru banking portal reports.

Leonid Levin, the head of the Russian State Duma's information policy committee, has previously said the law is meant to block access only to "unlawful content" and is not intended to impose restrictions on law-abiding citizens, according to business daily RBC.

    Will it work?

Roskomnadzor has been developing measures to identify suspect websites, as well as ways to block them.

However, in practice this is very difficult, and it may have unwanted consequences. For instance, the watchdog has a single register of banned domain names.

In June, one of Google.ru's web pages contained a redirect to a blocked online gambling domain, so due to the ban, the search engine was blocked for several hours.

    Image copyright Tor Project
Image caption The Tor Project is free software and an accompanying network that lets people visit websites anonymously

According to IT experts, the law provides exemption for corporate VPNs. However, it remains unclear how exactly Roskomnadzor will distinguish between corporate and public VPNs.

At present, it is impossible to differentiate them, says Leonid Yevdokimov, an expert at the Tor Project – a US-based team that creates software to let people visit websites anonymously and access otherwise hidden parts of the net.

    What will happen?

Some Russian social-media users have been agonising over whether the watchdog will now be able to restrict internet access from home if they search for a banned website. IT experts are unanimous that it will not.

It is up to search engine operators such as Google and Yandex to "shield" users from such banned websites, and if they fail to do so, they can be held responsible, banki.ru says.

Most lay internet users would not notice any changes once the law came into force, the communications director at media holding Rambler&Co, Matvei Alexeyev, told the BBC.

He sees it as a step towards greater transparency of VPN servers.

    Google investigates mysterious vanishing files

    Image copyright Google
Image caption Google Docs appears to be locking users out of files by flagging documents as violating its terms of services

Numerous Google Docs users have reported being mysteriously locked out of certain files in their accounts.

The error had caused files to be flagged as violating Google's terms of service.

Users had received a message saying: "This item has been flagged as inappropriate and can no longer be shared."

Google told the BBC that a code update had caused the error, but that the problem had now been resolved.

Users had taken to Twitter to complain about the issue, saying that while they were working on documents the screen suddenly froze, and then a message came up telling them they could no longer access a file.

Some people have also reported that another error prevented them from sending Google appeal requests to unlock their files.

Other strange behaviour has been noticed on the service – one user, Iain Mackenzie, said the words "game is over" had flashed up in a Google Docs document he had been editing and then disappeared.

Mr Mackenzie said that no other user had been in the file at the time, and that the Google Docs revisions log showed only he had been editing the document for the past few hours.

"This morning, we made a code push that incorrectly flagged a small percentage of Google Docs as abusive, which caused those documents to be automatically blocked," a Google spokeswoman told the BBC.

"A fix is in place and all users should have full access to their docs. Protecting users from viruses, malware, and other abusive content is central to user safety.

"We apologise for the disruption and will put processes in place to prevent this from happening again."

Rate hike to have ‘modest’ impact on mortgages

    01afa6523ceccf9711d7d0543b1c13080cc73689eb290b141e6fd146c88d1bc4_3973073
Image: Most mortgages are now not linked directly to the Bank of England base rate

By John-Paul Ford Rojas, Business Reporter

An expected Bank of England interest rate rise will have only a "modest" impact on mortgage borrowers, the UK' s biggest building society said.

Nationwide said fewer homeowners in the past would be affected, as the vast majority taking new loans now opt for fixed rate deals.

Those with mortgages linked to the Bank rate now represent a record low of 40%, down from a peak of 70% in 2001.

But it still means two in five home borrowers face a typical £15 rise in monthly repayments, or £180 a year, at a time when a squeeze in real terms wages has seen them fall to their lowest levels since 2005.

That will happen if as expected policy makers opt for a 0.25 percentage point hike this week – which would be the first increase in a decade.

The rise is opposed by some experts as economic growth remains sluggish and a squeeze on consumer incomes could be exacerbated by higher borrowing costs.

Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney hosts his Financial Stability Report press conference at the Bank of England in central London on November 30, 2016
Image: Mark Carney is expected to lead the Bank of England to an interest rate hike

But Robert Gardner, Nationwide's chief economist, said: "Providing labour market conditions do not weaken significantly, the impact of a small rate rise on most UK households is likely to be modest.

"That's not to say the rise will be welcome news for many borrowers.

"Household budgets are under pressure from the fact that wages have not been rising as fast as the cost of living.

"Indeed, in real terms (i.e. after adjusting for inflation) wage rates are still at levels prevailing in 2005."

The comments came as Nationwide said UK house price growth had edged up to an annual rate of 2.5% last month – though the outlook for the market remained subdued.

Prices rose 0.2% month on month, the building society said.

Mr Gardner said low mortgage rates and healthy levels of employment growth were supporting demand while prices were also being pushed up by a lack of homes on the market.

However, pressure on household incomes appeared to be weighing on confidence.

Howard Archer, chief economic adviser to the EY ITEM Club, said he was sceptical about the prospects of an upturn in the housing market.

He said it remained "under pressure from squeezed consumer purchasing power, fragile confidence and appreciable caution over engaging in major transactions".

"A likely Bank of England interest rate hike on Thursday may very well also weigh down on housing market activity," he added.

The Latest on sexual harassment allegations in Hollywood (all times EDT):

      8:40 p.m.

Beverly Hills police say they're investigating complaints against film mogul Harvey Weinstein and writer-director James Toback, who've been the subjects of sexual harassment allegations.

The Police Department acknowledged Tuesday night that it's received multiple complaints against the two men. The brief statements didn't specify the nature of those complaints.

However, Weinstein was fired from his own company over sexual harassment accusations and dozens of women, including actresses Selma Blair and Rachel McAdams, have made similar allegations against Toback.

Toback has said he doesn't remember meeting the women and Weinstein has denied any non-consensual sexual contact.

Messages left for a Weinstein representative weren't immediately returned. Toback has no listed agent or other representative.

      6:30 p.m.

CBS says it's investigating a sexual harassment allegation against Jeremy Piven, the latest Hollywood figure caught up in a widening circle after dozens of women alleged they were sexually harassed or assaulted by Harvey Weinstein.

Actress and reality star Ariane Bellamar claimed in posts on her Twitter account Monday that the Emmy-winning "Entourage" star groped her on two occasions.

Bellamar alleged that one encounter took place in Piven's trailer on the "Entourage" set and the other occurred at the Playboy Mansion.

CBS, which airs Piven's new series, "Wisdom of the Crowd," says in a statement that "we are aware of the media reports and are looking into the matter."

A representative for Piven didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. In a Monday interview with The Associated Press, Piven said he was glad people had come forward with allegations against Harvey Weinstein and that he had never been in that situation.

Bellamar's credits include "Suicide Squad" and "The Hangover Part III" and the reality series "Beverly Hills Nannies."

A relatively little-known Mexican actor is saying Kevin Spacey fondled or tried to fondle him against his will while Spacey was leading the Old Vic theater in London.

"Those of us who were around him at the Old Vic Theater in London know that a lot more people will come forward with their stories in the coming days and weeks," Roberto Cavazos wrote in a Facebook post.

Cavazos declined a request to be interviewed on the subject. Spacey's media representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Spacey served as artistic director of the theater from 2004 to 2015.

"It was more common for this guy, when he was in the bar of his theater, grabbing whoever caught his attention. That's the way it happened to me the second time," Cavazos wrote. "I didn't stand for it, but I know some people who were afraid to stop it."

It was not clear when the alleged incidents happened. Cavazos' resume lists two credits at the Old Vic, in 2008 and 2010.

A Delaware judge has scheduled an initial hearing in a lawsuit filed by disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein against the company he co-founded. Weinstein is seeking access to his employment file and emails.

The judge will hold a telephonic hearing Thursday on a motion by Weinstein's attorneys to fast-track his Chancery Court lawsuit.

Attorneys for Weinstein says he needs the records from The Weinstein Co. to defend himself in potential civil and criminal cases, and possibly to aid in investigating claims arising involving wrongful termination.

Weinstein's attorneys also contend that the information he is seeking could help the company respond to a civil rights investigation launched by New York's attorney general.

Weinstein was fired from his namesake company on Oct. 8, days after reports of sexual harassment by the producer ran in the New York Times.

      ———

      3:30 p.m.

The Old Vic theatre in London is expressing "deep dismay" at the sexual assault allegations made against Kevin Spacey, who led the company for 11 years.

The Old Vic says in a statement Tuesday "inappropriate behavior by anyone working at The Old Vic is completely unacceptable."

The theater also set up an anonymous process for anyone wanting to come forward to complain.

Spacey, who was artistic director of the theater from 2004 to 2015, is accused of trying to seduce a 14-year-old actor in 1986. He has apologized amid an international outcry.

Under Spacey, the 1,000-seat Old Vic saw its profile and financial health improve with such acclaimed productions as Shakespeare's "Richard III" with Spacey in the lead role.

      ———

      2 p.m.

Netflix and the maker of "House of Cards" say production on the show starring Kevin Spacey is suspended.

The political satire is filming its sixth and final season amid fallout from a 1980s sexual abuse allegation leveled at Spacey by a former child star.

In a joint statement Tuesday, Netflix and producer Media Rights Capital say production was put on hold to review the situation and address "any concerns of our cast and crew."

A Netflix spokeswoman declined to provide further details about the action. On Monday, executives from the two companies traveled to the Baltimore, Maryland, set to meet with actors and others involved in the production. Spacey was not scheduled to work that day.

The streaming service announced Monday its Emmy-winning "House of Cards" would come to an end after next season, a decision it says was made before Spacey was accused of trying to seduce a 14-year-old actor in 1986.

Spacey has apologized for the incident he said he doesn't recall but which would have stemmed from "drunken behavior." He also spoke publicly for the first time about being gay, which drew backlash from some observers as an attempt at deflection.

A release date for the final "House of Cards" episodes has yet to be announced. Netflix is developing a possible spinoff of the drama that helped put the streaming service on the TV series map.

      ———

      11:30 a.m.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has revoked an award it was going to give Kevin Spacey, a decision made after allegations that he made sexual advances on a teen boy.

The group says "''it will not honor Kevin Spacey with the 2017 International Emmy Founders Award."

The award is to honor "an individual who crosses cultural boundaries to touch humanity." Spacey was to get it at a gala on Nov. 20 in New York City. Past recipients include Steven Spielberg, Shonda Rhimes and J.J. Abrams.

The move comes after actor Anthony Rapp came forward with claims Spacey made inappropriate sexual advances toward him in 1986, when he was 14. Netflix announced Monday that it was pulling the plug on "House of Cards," which stars Spacey.

      8:55 a.m.

British media are reporting that police have widened their investigation into sexual assault claims against disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Citing unidentified sources, the Independent newspaper, Press Association and Sky News say London's Metropolitan Police are now investigating allegations by seven women over incidents that reportedly took place from the 1980s to 2015.

Police declined to comment, only saying Tuesday that officers from its child abuse and sexual offenses command are probing sexual assault allegations made by seven victims. British police do not identify people under investigation until charges are laid.

The news comes just days after the British Film Institute stripped Weinstein of its highest honor, saying his alleged "appalling conduct" stands in opposition to the organization's values.

Weinstein denies having any non-consensual sexual activity.

On the heels of Hulu's success with "The Handmaid's Tale" comes another adaptation of a Margaret Atwood novel, this time on Netflix.

All six episodes of the miniseries "Alias Grace," based on Atwood's 1996 novel, will be available on Netflix starting Nov. 3. Unlike "The Handmaid's Tale," which was set in a dystopian future in which women were forced to become breeders, "Alias" is set in 1840s Canada and based on actual events. It tells the story of the real-life murders of a wealthy Ontario farmer and his housewife, and Grace Marks, the poor Irish domestic servant who is convicted of killing them.

Also coming to Netflix is Spike Lee's mini-series, "She's Gotta Have It," based on his 1986 debut film, and Dee Rees' new film "Mudbound," which will be released simultaneously in select theaters on Nov. 17 and stars Mary J. Blige and Carey Mulligan.

On Amazon, fans will be able to access the Amazon Original film "The Big Sick" and "Despicable Me 3." On Hulu, users will be able to stream several James Bond films as well as the 2017 comedy "Person to Person."
