Key Ryan Murphy Collaborator Tim Minear Inks New 20th TV Overall Deal
The '911,' 'Feud' and 'American Horror Story' showrunner will remain at the studio as Murphy plots his move to Netflix.
As Ryan Murphy plots his move to Netflix, one of his most trusted collaborators has decided to remain at 20th Century Fox Television.
Tim Minear, the showrunner on Fox's 911 and FX's American Horror Story and Feud, has inked a new overall deal with the studio behind all three shows. The pact, said to be the standard two years plus an option for a third, will ensure that 911, American Horror Story and Feud — all co-created by Murphy and longtime collaborator Brad Falchuk and renewed for additional seasons — will remain business as usual despite Murphy's pending move to Netflix.
"Tim is one of Ryan and Brad's most trusted collaborators on both FX's No. 1 series, American Horror Story and Fox's No. 1 series [of the year], 911. He's a brilliant writer who is endlessly creative and can do just about anything. Keeping him at 20th was a huge priority for us and for Ryan and Brad, and this deal ensures these two prized series remain strong for years to come."
That Minear would opt to remain at 20th TV — his longtime home of more than 20 years — comes as sources say Murphy had been actively trying to recruit his superstar collaborators to Netflix. 20th TV has been actively trying to ink new deals with many of Murphy's collaborators.
The deal affords Minear the opportunity to strike out on his own — he'll develop new projects under the pact — and sell to multiple outlets. The pact does come with its share of uncertainty as 20th TV will become part of the Disney portfolio should regulators approve the $52.6 billion sale. (Should the Disney sale go through, it would force studio and network presidents Dana Walden and Gary Newman leave one of the two positions.)
"I'm pleased to be able continue my collaboration with 20th, Dana and Gary and Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. And I wasn't about to give up this parking space," Minear said.
Minear, whose credits also include The Chicago Code, Terriers, Dollhouse, Wonderfalls, Firefly, Angel and The X-Files, is repped by WME, the Shuman Co. and Jackoway Tyerman.
Other showrunners who have recently signed overalls with 20th TV include Kurt Sutter, Rich Appel and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel.
